Katherine “Leona” Call of Copan was in Dewey Thursday when she went to dwell in the house of the Lord forever. She was 100 years young, and in life, her cup runneth over, filled to the brim with family, fellowship and the love of her Creator and Father Almighty.
Katherine, affectionately known as Leona, was born the daughter of Walter and Mary (Hill) Cummings on Oct. 1, 1917, in Boulanger. She was born in Oklahoma but grew up in Chautauqua and rural Sedan, Kansas. She married the love of her life Harold A. Call on Dec. 3, 1936, and they shared 64 years of loving marriage before his passing in 2000. In 1958 they moved the family to Copan and made their home closer to the oil leases Harold worked.
Leona and Harold loved to go dancing, they would load up the car with their best friends the Burchs and all the kids to head to town. In the winter, they heated their car with a kerosene heater to try to keep the boys warm. Once retired they would load up their camper and boat and head down to Aransas Pass, TX, to spend the winter, cherishing down time with family and friends, and making many precious memories.
Leona was a homemaker at heart, she enjoyed spending time with her family in any way possible, camping, gardening, canning her own vegetables, mowing her lawn, and going to the Dewey Adult Center. Leona loved her family, but even more so, she loved the Lord and was an active member of Copan United Methodist Church.
Leona is survived by two sons, Melvin Call and Mary of Copan, and LeRoy Call and Sheri of Copan; one sister in law Georgia Call; five grandchildren, Vicky Pitts, Mark Call, H.C. Call and Emily, Rod Jackson and Chris, and Kassy Friedman and Jay; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband; parents; two sisters, Nila and Maudie; seven brothers, Loyd, Ernie, Virgil, Cedrice, Wayne, Carl, Ray; and one daughter in law Henry May “Babe” Jackson Call.
